Robb has lost most of the Riverlands even before he marches back to the Twins, simply because the Iron Throne can always marshal more forces than the King in the North. Both Edmure and Robb are now committed to warfare in the Riverlands, without the prospect of much success.Īccordingly, when the North itself is threatened, the Riverlands are doomed. The North, without an army of professionals but composed mainly of levies that sooner or later need to return to their lands, can't offer much improvement to the defense of the region. To keep the land against a determined enemy, however, is nearly impossible. Some strongholds or natural outlines favor defense, as we will see most notably at the Red Fork.

With that said, would there not have been a lot of aversion from the lesser Houses of the Riverlands towards the idea of becoming a dominion in a Northern kingdom? I mean how would Houses such as the Brackens, Blackwoods, Wayns, Pipers and other bannermen of the Tullys have felt about bending the knee to a new King in the North (who was completely irrelevant to them), considering that the had no blood ties or marriage alliances with the Starks, It seems a little strange doesn't it? I can also see why the Freys would've originally been on board with this since a member of House Frey was promised to Robb and therefore would have been the queen. It makes sense that the Tullys would be happy to trade their current ruler for the Starks as all of the Stark children have Tully blood including their would-be king Robb. This makes sense since the Tullys sided with Robb against the Iron throne. When Robb was declared King in the North, the Riverlands were also claimed as part of the kingdom.
